Currently open a local file from Desktop is not possible and from browser is very tedious as explained on May 2017 update:

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-may-feature-summary/#urlTables

"If you want to use file URLs, there are some limitations. They will not open in the Power BI Desktop, only in web browsers. For most browsers, you will need to right click on the link, copy the link address, and paste the URL in a new tab"

It will be great if can be improved the way to open the files in same way as with web images or files (http://).

Yes, this feature is needed and is like bringing Power BI to year 2024.....one of the basic feature that it must have. For me it is tremendously useful.

Please implement this very basic functionality. We are in 21st century and NO, not every information can be shared on sharepoint or other web applications.

It would be great to have this feature. Some institutions, e.g., government, are still using shared network drives.

Would also like this as a feature or failing the ability to launch the file, then to list the directory in a browser

Mind blowing to me that this isn't already a feature! My links work fine when I paste them into Edge, but clicking as a URL in the report does nothing.
