Currently open a local file from Desktop is not possible and from browser is very tedious as explained on May 2017 update:

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-may-feature-summary/#urlTables

"If you want to use file URLs, there are some limitations. They will not open in the Power BI Desktop, only in web browsers. For most browsers, you will need to right click on the link, copy the link address, and paste the URL in a new tab"

It will be great if can be improved the way to open the files in same way as with web images or files (http://).

Just a reminder to MicroSoft team that this is a feature that many of us still are waiting for us. We still have a lot of files on the server we need to quickly access while looking at our reports. Having this in Power BI I could automate the whole process.

The hyperlink shows up correctly for the web URL. It's just that Power BI is blocking the action. Copying and pasting the URL works but is not an ideal solution.

Please at least whitelist some file types, like images!

Continually asked by customers for this feature. Mailto and web links work just fine, why don't file links? We are trying to link to data standards that are relevant to what the BI is doing reporting on.

Huh? Why would this not be allowed?

Apart from having the functionality to open files from URLs in power bi,
it would be really helpful if we could attach or embed files in
Power bi, like we do in word or PowerPoint currently

Note that the image URL action specifically removes file:// uri's and calls them invalid. My impression is that this functionality could open up security holes. In the end you should if possible, use a https:// pointing at business onedrive or sharepoint as the target.
