When a field changes in a dataset it makes all visuals that reference it die and you can't just fix the invalid field by pointing at the right field you have to re add the field and remove the old one.
More often than not one has to remove first and loose any settings you've made on that field, i.e. name, formatting and some visuals lose even more settings.
It would be good to have a list of what visuals are broken and be able to correct them to point to the correct field.

You can fix incorrect field references by dragging and dropping a field into the "Fields" control.

It would be helpful if PBI could display the invalid/removed field name so that we have a better idea what to replace it with.

The "Fix references" button does nothing except making the control disappear. Then we lose the control and have to rebuild it. It is behavior like this that makes Power BI look like an unfinished product in beta test.
