The dataflows product is potentially very useful - I especially like the idea of being able to append historical data to incrementally refreshed data.

However, one major drawback is the fact that in order to use a dataflow in a dataset, you have to download it to the desktop, and then upload it back to the service once you've completed your data model.

It would be great if you only had to use the preview version of the dataflow in desktop, or even better, if you could do all modelling, DAX etc. completely within the service.

If there are workarounds for this I'd love to hear them.

I vote for this !

It seems strange the need to use PBI desktop to connect to dataflow and then upload a "semantic model" (ex "dataset") back to the service.

Even if all the modelling capabilities aren't available in the service, the ability to create a basic dataset/report straight from a dataflow without having to go through Desktop would be extremely useful

We need this feature, i do not understand why should i go back to the power bi desktop in order to consume my created dataflow in the cloud. Please colleagues we need this feature.

Thanks for collaboration!

I completely agree with you. This feature is highly necessary and has been requested for the past four years. It is quite puzzling to understand Microsoft's strategy in not yet making it available in the Power BI service.

Well its like to get a banana but you can't eat it.

I am not sure if thats money driven, but we would like to use dataflows in Power BI Services.

It looks like the only way is to buy a PPU or Premium Capacity License...

I would expect a bit more flexibility also for user who can only use the Power BI Services on their devices like:

(a) Mac user

(b) Linux user

(c) Chromebook (aka chrome os) user

Looks like the world of Power BI is only for Windows users.

Well deciding whats best is comparing Premium income vs excluding users from important features.

Sadly it needs more courage and more support for PRO users.

Cheers

RE: Dataflow-based Datasets in service

!!! definitely a key feature !!!

why it is not possible if everything is in the cloud?

I am working mostly in the cloud by avoiding to much load on my laptop

include reducing the abuse of security as well.

MICROSOFT why not taking the cloud service to the next level?

Please take care of professional user requirements ;)

Please make the ability to keep everything in the Cloud and not have to interact with Power BI Desktop to use a dataflow that is already in the Cloud.
