I recently had a user auto-scale a P3 capacity by Googling for instructions on how to create a composite model and then attempting to do so with an "enterprise" dataset.

Currently, permissions on the ability to create composite models are tenant wide and limited to:

  • Yes (allowed)
  • Yes, but only for specified users/groups
  • No (not allowed)

There are circumstances where creating a composite model may be the only way to accomplish certain requirements, such as real-time data. So completely disabling them might be problematic.

I'd like to suggest that it be possible to restrict the ability to use specific datasets in a composite model on a case-by-case basis. Could be as simple as an additional permission on a dataset.

RE: Restrict Specific Datasets from Composite Models

This is already possible, sort of...Via Tabular Editor, click on Model, review properties for Discourage Composite Models. Set to True.Power BI Desktop: open your report, navigate to Options > Current File > Published Dataset Settings. Check the box for Discourage DirectQuery connections.Neither of these will completely prevent (hence use of the word "discourage") but mitigates the chances of all but the most advanced of users from creating composite models. They're usually not the scary users...
