We have run into the instance where the source file from OneDrive/SharePoint that our Dataset is connected to has been overwritten with another file that had been modified offline or was removed and replaced with a file of the same name. This results in the Dataset to OneDrive link being severed, although there is no error or warning to indicate this.
I have confirmed with Microsoft Support that replacing the linked file in any way will break the connection the PowerBI Service as it is linked via a backend file id. There is no way to resolve this, other than to recreate the dataset from the source and update any other reports that were connected to the severed link dataset to the new one that has been uploaded.
Firstly, and more importantly, provide an option to "reconnect" an existing data set to a new OneDrive or SharePoint file so that the OneDrive refresh can resume working.
Secondly, it would be great to even see the location of the document that a dataset is connected to as per ideas https://ideas.powerbi.com/ideas/idea/?ideaid=0a96291f-a590-490f-bac5-5daba3f759dd and https://ideas.powerbi.com/ideas/idea/?ideaid=a7ca339c-cfc0-4a62-8e98-4e81c7303406.

RE: OneDrive/SharePoint Data Sets - Modify Connected File
It would also be useful to have the ability to link a dataset that has already been published to a file in OneDrive or SharePoint. At the moment one can't do this and the only way to migrate to using OD/SP is to delete an existing dataset and then upload from OD/SP.This causes a number of issues because our usage metrics and embedding solutions rely on the existing report/dataset IDs, which would change if we followed the remove/upload path.
