I would really like this feature, so I could use the Power BI desktop->Publish to cloud workflow for reports with streaming datasets (such as data from Stream Analytics).

The vision of "connect to anything, specially if in the cloud" is flawed by MS not enabling such an scenario (which is being demo'ed in every PowerBI Presentation)

I would like to add the streaming data to a data model with other sources of data. For example adding a customer list against a streaming set of data.

I would definitely like this adding. Seems a bit odd that it is only PB I Service that has streaming

Now only online Power BI service is supporting real-time data analysis.
It would be great if the same is incorporated in desktop version too
