Currently I use three datasources. Each time I go from Dev to Preview to Production, I have to change these connection string all over. I would be great if I can have a shared connection or a variable definition or something, so that I just change that once when I have to change the environment.

With the May Power BI Desktop update, it is now possible to manage "data sources" referenced in the current report and easily migrate them (i.e. SQL_Server1 to SQL_Server2). Please refer to the "Data Source Settings Enhancements" section in the official update announcement: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-may-update-feature-summary/

RE: Ability to create shared data source
This is going to be very helpful, thank you!

Would it be possible to also allow the connection to persist when the Power BI desktop is deployed to the PowerBI service. Whilst l have been able to change connections using some custom M as you suggested. These changes are not persisted when the published to PowerBI service.
RE: Ability to create shared data source
Yes, we are urgently in need of something similar. What we need is a way to have a single place where we can store things like the base path to some OData-connection
