Allow schema refresh for SQL Azure Direct Connect

Administrator on 13 May 2016 02:08:44

Hi everyone, You should check out Direct Query in Power BI Desktop, it doesn't have the same restrictions as the experience in the service. You can build your reports in Desktop and publish them to the service! Here's more details: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-desktop-use-directquery/

We have been using PowerBI Pro for 8 months now and this is the most frustrating part of the services. I've spent over than 40 hours rebuilding reports because our schema changed or we decided to add new fields to our data.

We're at the point where we are considering leaving this service. Amazon Quick Insights looks promising.

It's incredible you can not update the schema. We are seriously questioning such a great product for such a small thing. By the way: We want to do everything from the web, client aplications are the past.

I was developing a test with Power BI on SQL Azure. You know since 'Rome wasn't build in one day' we use views as a datasource. After changing my view the reports became unusable! Can't believe this is true! i am a huge Power BI fan, but this is not 'Cloud first'. I can not use Directy Query in Power BI desktop because there are no calculated columns.
SQL Azure is for now a no go for me and my customers.

Thanks for the suggestion to use desktop Amanda, but it doesn't seem to work as you are supposing. When I publish to Power BI cloud from desktop it works fine, but when I update it after adding a new view or dataset the datasource associated with the report is not updated in cloud. This is the same problem as before. It will work if I delete the entire set and start over, but then all my pins to the dashboard are gone. Sorry, we still need a good solution here. Kind of frustrating really.

Data models change and evolve - content should be able to evolve with them

I've had to edit the schema multiple times. This has cost us so much time and $! this needs to get fixed

I'm shocked this isn't built in - do I have to delete my data source and all my reports if I add or update a view??!
