During several presentations I get questions regarding the total of stacked columns. In the current situation you can select to label all the parts of the stacked column but no grand total. I would like to see the option to add a label to the Visuals which shows the total of the stacked column (this counts for values only). Ideally this total would deviate together with the drilldowns you select, so it stays interactive whatever filters you select or subsets you create on your dashboard.

Thanks for all the votes! Happy to report this was shipped in September: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-september-2020-feature-summary/#Total_labels_stacked

RE: Totals in stacked column charts

For stacked BAR (horizontal) charts too please! The combo workaround isn't available for these. Layering works, sort of, but is an awful way to have to do it.

Great that there's an alternative, but this would be a very helpful key feature to have as part of the default graph setup.

RE: Totals in stacked column charts

Randomly discovered this hack to show Totals above the columns in stacked column charts.

Key points:
1.) Change the Stacked Column Chart to a Combo Chart (Line and stacked column chart).
2.) In the Combo Chart, drag the same field that you have under "Column values" so that it is duplicated under "Line values".
3.) Use Formatting -> Shapes -> Stroke Width to make the line thickness=0 and/or remove the line markers.

Hope this helps.

RE: Totals in stacked column charts

The ability to show a total on all charts would be lovely. Having to create multiple workaround measures to show a total in the tooltip instead of simply using the legend is a pain in the backside. Definitely long overdue.

RE: Totals in stacked column charts

I've faced several times when my boss asked me, ok. I liked TOP N bars, but what is the total?
So, indeed great idea.

RE: Totals in stacked column charts

Any update on this? I had to layer two charts on top of each other to get the Grand Total to appear above each bar. Every time I need to change or move, it's a hassle. I just had to make an update yesterday and I said to myself "I cannot believe that I have to create this visual in this way" Come on Microsoft. Please implement!

RE: Totals in stacked column charts

I use a Line and Stacked Column Chart to give me totals for each Bar HOWEVER the other issue I have is that the position for the Data Label total are then completely random. Some within the bar, some above the bar and some, half in and out of the bar and off to one side. Come on MS this is really basic functionality. When Users ask about this and you tell them its not possible to move these it's a little embarrasing.
Either allow us to reduce the charted area on a bar chart visual so the totals are nicely lined up OR please force the data labels to line up automatically. Thanks.

RE: Totals in stacked column charts

Would also need the ability to sort by the total.

RE: Totals in stacked column charts

I use a stacked bar with line chart where the line chart provides the grand total
