If we add two fields to a matrix in the "Rows" it groups the second data point by the first data point (think Department -> Person). When you apply conditional formatting for something like stoplights using an example of 0-8 hours per day (0-3 red, 3-6 yellow, 6-8 green), that filter rule ends up conditionally formatting the top group the same way as the inner detail.

In this example, there may be 2 people rolled up under a group and if one was on vacation and the other worked 2 hours, the collapsed group gets turned red because the group worked 2 hours. This is much more evident on say a weekend with Sat-Sun normally off (blank hours get no color) and someone works just 1 hour. The collapsed group get a red circle.

It would be nice if you could say "Do not format top level groups" or something like that.

Similarly, you may want to apply different filtering at the group level. Say if you wanted to know if the 5 people in a group had a combined 40 hours in a day (5 people * 8 hours each) and stop light that, while still having the 0-8 for each row of the inner detail when you expand the group.
