Power BI datasets

Now it is only possible to connect from Power bI Desktop to Power to 1 BI dataset. If you have on Power Bi Servics more datasets, like for different sources hr, finance, sales, operations it would be nice to have teh possibility to connect to more than 1 Power BI dataset in 1 Power BI Desktop Dashboard/Reports file and publish this to Power BI Services. You can see Power BI dataset as a datamart and it would be nice to integrate all in 1 dashboard. What is your opinion ?

RE: power bi datasets

Absolitelly agree! It would add flexibility to the feature.

RE: power bi datasets

Agree, if user who would like to use Power BI dataset from datastores where she/he doesn't have access, for example SQL server, then this could be valuable feature where user can combine own dataset and external one.

RE: power bi datasets

We are attempting to merge and report on data from a SAAS application that is connected to the Power BI Service, with on-prem datasources. This is currently not possible because Power BI only allows you to work with one "app" datasource at a time. I was annoyed by this limitation as I can "get data" from other sources and merge/combine to my heart's content, but this is not possible with datasources from SAAS applications.

RE: power bi datasets

This is very valuable! In the end, the power of bi :) is to be able to create integrated datamodels not being forced to do that all within one source db. Next to that it would be handy to have the ability to to create additional inline tables for mapping etc...(this is a feature that Qlik and Tableau do have)

RE: power bi datasets

Completely agree. We would like to be able to create multiple data models which may or may not be combined into a single reporting tool. For example our project office may only need the project master data and costs. Whereas Finance will want HR reporting in their model as well. Right now it's all or nothing.

I thought the new dataflow option would solve this, but you can't edit/transform the data unless you have a premium license. So we're stuck with merging all data sources into one model, and having to refresh all at once even if some data refreshes at different rates. Disappointing.

This is very useful option then preparing another report from scratch

RE: power bi datasets

Agree. Many of our reports rely on the set of millions of rows with only minor changes in Power Query or the addition of one extra table. We need the ability to edit and combine Power BI data sources.

RE: power bi datasets

Completely agree - support for a Power BI report able to connect to multiple Power BI (service) datasets, or for mixed data sets (e.g. Power BI dataset and Azure SQL).
