Allow a user to set the default value for a slicer or tile-by value on a page/dashboard, so that when the Power View page is opened for the first time, the default value is selected.
eg. If the page has a slicer for Year or Month, allow the user to configure the most recent Year or Month to be selected by default.

Update 10/20/2022 - Update from Mo - we are working on this in the new year

Thanks for everyone's votes and comments. This is a feature on our backlog; however we cannot share a timeline at the moment.

It looks like many of the requests will be addressed by the new 'Sticky filters' capability. Now when you log out of Power BI and come back to a report, the same items will be selected as when you left. For those who're looking to have a 'last month' selection, the relative date slicer might help. Those with comments about currencies where having multiple selected makes the report meaningless - the report will load with whatever selection the author saved, so if you save it with one currency selected your users will see that by default. If there are scenarios that these features don't address, please let us know in your comments - if you are really specific it'll help us build the feature to work just the way you want! Thanks again!

RE: Default Selected Slicer or Tile-By Value Configuration

Before I start this rant, I want you to know that I am a big fan of Power BI and its undisputed number one position for dashboarding/reporting solutions. The rate of change since the early inception days and Microsoft's commitment to providing a world class product is commendable. But then there is this ongoing issue of there not being an acceptable solution to have a default value for slicers. As others have posted, there are a number of workarounds, none of them, in my opinion hit the mark. I have used Microsoft's other reporting product, Reporting Services quite extensively, even before Power BI was around, and their ability to have a default value for a parameter based on a hard coded value or a value derived from a query is a simple, yet powerful solution. I cannot understand why Power BI does not have the same type of functionality, especially as both products are Microsoft. From a user perspective, they want to see current relevant data when they go into a dashboard without having to scroll through a list to find the latest month or have "Current Year" or "Current Month" as options. Sticky filters or Relative time filtering are also not really suitable especially if you want to see the latest month for which you have data. We might be in calendar month of today but the data in the dashboard might only become available during the course of the current month. Sod until that becomes available the slicer must default to the latest month, we have data for, i.e. last month, which changes to this month once that data is loaded later in the month.I also know there might be 3rd party visuals available which might address this issue, but surely, this is a big enough requirement and has been requested by many community members that justify that this be rolled out in the base Power BI offering.Pretty please.......

RE: Default Selected Slicer or Tile-By Value Configuration

To Power BI users everywhere: Please let Microsoft know the product is not really functional without slicers that can be preselected intelligently. For example, there is no way to preselect the most recent month (in a way that allows other date ranges to be selected). Yes there are ridiculous workarounds that take huge amounts of effort and don't really work.

The sticky filter is not enough. You need to make it possible for the business owner to direct what the report audience shall see when opening the report and/or resetting the report filters in order to focus on the desired "time window" etc.In addition to making it possible to set default values, make it possible to set a new option "mark as date slicer" on/off, and thus enable the Date Filtering options in the slicer visualization. One angle is simply put to move the existing filter pane options to the Slicer Visualization Options. So, add the options:Set as default value (when opening/resetting/refreshing)Mark as date slicer

RE: Default Selected Slicer or Tile-By Value Configuration

From our business we had also received a similar requirement to have "Default Year" selection to a Slicer. We have done a workaround for this by ourselves.Using Relative Year, we had flagged. Current Year as 0 and called it into Year1 column as "Default Year", e.g. 2023 is shown as "Default Year" and rest year as it is.Using Custom Hierarchy, we had created a Time Period Hierarchy and in Report have used it in a report slicer and selected. "Default Year" option.Since Hierarchy was there, we did not get any problem on computing YoY calculations.

RE: Default Selected Slicer or Tile-By Value Configuration

This has been on the wish list for most of the past decade. My team is really suffering from not having a functional date slicer and slicer pre-selection feature in general. On behalf of all Power BI users, please make sure this is in your next release. Best regards,

Is there any update that can be shared? The Oct 20, 2022 Administrator message said it would be worked on the coming year (2023).
