Yes! I need this! I am currently working with PowerPivot (after reading Rob Collie's book) and thought it would be a press of a button to import that model and start designing a dashboard in Power BI with it. Sadly, not possible yet. I am already amazed by both BI solutions, but a link would make it the perfect solution for me!

Know you are working fast at trying to catch up, though both power pivot model and ssas tabular model connections are needed

Our Analytics team in the process of adopting Tableau due to the inability of PBID of working with Power Pivots data models.
Time is the essence and at this time our team will have to move to another tool that meet our needs !!

I concur with some of my colleagues that not being able to import a PowerPivot model into Power BI Designer is a deal breaker. In my case, my model is very complex and has over 60 measures, so having to re-create all this in PBID is a waste of time. Thanks for the great work you guys are putting out, I trust you can solve this requirement.

RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer

So now we know power BI designer does not have the capability to design a feature rich Data model (unlike power Pivot) nither can it read the Power Pivot Data model. In other words, BI Designer is a Data Model Challenged Tool.

And this stops me using power BI Designer. Real SAD.

I do not want to hung upon this challenge and want to look for a workaround. I am not a technical, so please point me to right Direction:

1) Can i design the data model in any other tool (eg. VIsual Studio) which BI Designer can read as Data model?

2) Installing SQL Server on local PC will help in any way?

3) Any other workaround Plz?

I need to design an Analytical Solution for my Academic Research and power BI fits so well for it, only missing piece is the Data Model capability.

Can you guys plz help me through this?

Without datamodel feature Power BI Designer is just 40% Complete. How can this not be there to begin with :-(

Even though Power Pivot seems to be an integral source of data for dashboard design/development , it seems like its is an after thought while integrating into new microsoft offerengs like Power designer. Its frustrating when you have leverage your existing data models using these newer microsoft BI tools. I think the product designers should prioritize these customer requests better.

This is a critical feature so our clients don't have to do multiple types of data sources for the same data!!!!! Thanks for starting it.

Power Pivot models should be importable/exportable in both directions. From Excel to Power BI designer and vice versa.
