It would be great if we could Import a tabular model into PowerPivot.

RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer
Really glad to hear it.
RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer
Being able to utilize a simple gantt chart in Power BI Designer would also be very nice.
RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer
Is there an estimated release date for being able to import an existing Power Pivot model into Power BI Designer or Power BI services?
RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer
Regarding Will Thompson's comment below:
"Hi Craig, you can upload/import Excel to the Power BI *service*, but not yet in the Designer. We're working on that scenario! Thanks for the feedback!"
It would be nice if there is a way to update the data model associated to an earlier Excel import; either by means of overwriting (uploading a file) or perhaps by editing it online.
(Perhaps I'm missing something and didn't know that there is a way of updating the data model?)
Thanks in advance,
Julie
RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer
'Miguel - Thank you for your quick response.
To answer your questions below:
- We are currently utilizing Power Pivot and Power Query add-ins for Excel 2010, so we are not using Power View. As such, we will be building Power View reports from scratch. Having PQ queries available would be awesome.
- For phase one, just being able to load the Power Pivot model into Designer would be sufficient (spectacular!). The main features that we would like to utilize in the near future are more around the visualization and sharing tools present with Designer. We find these solutions much more appealing than utilizing another vendor such as Tableau.
Thanks,
Judd
RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer
'Judd - While we don't have an specific date that we can share at this stage, I can tell you that we're actively working on this feature and it will be available in the next few months.
A few questions for you:
- How important would it be for you to migrate not just the PowerPivot model artifacts but also the PQ queries and Power View reports from Excel into the Designer? Would you be ok with having to rebuild Power View reports after migrating the other artifacts to the Designer?
- There are "some" PowerPivot features that are not available yet in the Designer. For instance, the ability to define KPIs. This feature might come after we enable the "migration of Excel Power BI artifacts into the Designer", which would mean that some artifacts would be migrated but you won't be able to modify them in the Designer until later (effectively, you'd be able to use them in your reports, but not change them until that feature lights up).
Thanks,
M.

Thanks for the vote. This is super high on our backlog.
RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer
I second this! I think it would be crucial to have this connection.
RE: Import a tabular model into powerpivot and/or power bi designer
All our current PowerBI data models are in Power Pivot, not supporting that in PowerBI is quite a step back. Please do add support for PowerPivot as a data source. Even Tableau supports it ;)

Surprised that there are not more votes for this one
