At this time, a gateway will not function properly if you are using data sources and one is online and one is on-prem. As soon as the online data source is added, the gateway is designed to gray out because Power BI interprets that it is no longer needed. I would like to be able to combine data sources from both on-prem and online sources together with the use of gateways.

Any updates on this? Huge roadblocker for us... Need to combine DW data (SQL Server) with budgeting w/ excel files on OneDrive for Business.

I completely agree: to adopt PBI in large organizations this is a must have feature!

I'm also trying to combine data from CRM online with an on-prem SQL database.... I need this feature to be able to refresh data.

Why can I add online sources to on-prem Gateway in "Manage Gateways" if they are not supported?

This feature should have been implemented from day one as I suppose that this marked to enterprise customers.

This is not a improvement, it is fixing a major problem!
Already stated:
This is a major problem, trying to combine Dynamics online with an on prem SQL database and it's not possible. One of the key selling points of the product is being able to combine data sources and this is just not possible. Please fix!

Some online data sources do work. I can connect to an Acumatica O-Data feed and Excel files on my laptop using the Data Gateway but cannot get Saleforce.com and Excel files on my laptop to work. The problem, in my case, appears to be the link to Salesforce.com.
