Vote on this idea if you want expand/collapse on column headers in the matrix similar to what was shipped for row headers in November (https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-november-2018-feature-summary/#expandCollapse).

10/20/2022 - Just an update, this is an extremely expensive item, which is why it has not been picked up yet. I promise we will revisit this after we ship visual calculations

RE: Add expand/collapse feature to column headers

Any update on the status? How long does an idea typically take to from under review to planned?

RE: Add expand/collapse feature to column headers

Please add this feature! It does not make sense that PowerBI does not have simple features that are available in Excel Pivot tables.

This feature is available in version 4 of the Financial Reporting Matrix custom visual. You can watch a demo video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfX0O1jMOMo

RE: Add expand/collapse feature to column headers

And make the plus/minus buttons a default not having to add every time?

RE: Add expand/collapse feature to column headers

In General for the Matrix visual, all functionalities for the Rows should also be available for the Columns in the same way. For example, Sort is only available for Rows and Values, not for Columns. But this is much needed for Finance Reporting. It could easily be included in the "More Options" menu within the visual. That could be a quick win to implement

RE: Add expand/collapse feature to column headers

I have been working as a Power BI developer/consultant from the start, and every month since then I have been scrolling through the list of new updates, looking for this feature.

I cannot count how many customers throughout those years, I have been trying to tell how great Power BI is, and then explain to them why this feature is not available. It is hard to implement, is the best answer I have been able to give, then they look at me and say, But it has been in Excel since the dawn of time...

I have not given up yet.

RE: Add expand/collapse feature to column headers

Look, it is the exceptional function this point to have a view within a table, we have countless possibilities of use, such as a company's cash flow, grouping sales periods of products and categories, that is, the possibilities will be absurd with that functionality.

RE: Add expand/collapse feature to column headers

To act as though Power BI is the future and not have equivalent functionality to Excel as the basic offering seems absolute madness to me!
