With large volume of data in SharePoint List, it takes forever for a scheduled/on-demand refresh as it refreshes everything from scratch. It would be nice to support direct query (live query) against SPO List. Customer is expecting to see real-time dashboard change when item is updated in SPO list.

Yes, I want it too.
For easy / quick / real-time, I want the DirectQuery to SharePoint List, instead of Import from SharePoint List.

Considering that PBI and SPO are both cloud apps hosted by MS, why hasn't this happened yet?

Clients increasingly demanding real time data to be fetched.
Has there been any update on the this in the last year. Keen to know if Microsoft is working on this request.

Exactly this. There is a huge market using SharePoint today and connecting visuals to SPO Lists with as close to real-time data as possible will open up a world of use cases. One in particular, a client is looking to see a prioritization matrix change with respect to new data entered in a List to make key business decisions. Having live connectivity to this list is not something Tableau or Qlikview can do today and would stand a significant opportunity for Microsoft.
