At the moment it is only possible to save a Power BI report with data source Analysis Services to the Report Server. With any other data source you get a error, that only Analysis Services is supported. Please add the possibility to save reports with other data sources to Report Server.

With Power BI Report Server (October 2017), released earlier this week, you can now: - Import data from any Power BI Desktop data source - Schedule data refresh or connect in "DirectQuery" mode for many of the most-used data sources (see data source support: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/documentation/reportserver-data-sources/) Read the blog post: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/new-version-of-power-bi-report-server-now-available/ Thanks to all of you who tried the August 2017 Preview and shared your feedback!

Being able to leverage SSRS Data Sources (rather than an Analysis Services connection embedded in the Power BI report) would be a good step forward, particularly for deployment to downstream PBIRS environments. Embedding the connection in the report makes it difficult / infeasible to easily move a report from DEV to TEST & PRODUCTION environments.

'@Anonymous, good question. The reason why Analysis Services was fundamentally different from every other data source is that Power BI uses the Analysis Services engine as its data engine. When you connect "live" to Analysis Services, Power BI uses the external Analysis Services server as its data engine, which is why we were able to bring Power BI Report Server to market even before we could integrate the Analysis Services engine into it. When you connect to any other data source (whether in "Import" or in DirectQuery mode), Power BI uses an integrated version of the Analysis Services engine, so the next step was integrating the Analysis Services engine into Report Server; that's the progress you can now see in the August 2017 Preview. Finally, enabling scheduled data refresh and DirectQuery requires one more step: enabling the Report Server and its integrated Analysis Services engine to connect -- and to _authenticate_ -- to SQL Server and to other supported data sources. Rest assured that we're now working on that third step.

Trying to understand why the team is not implementing direct connection to native SQLSERVER databases yet. " seeing this was disappointing •Direct Query data connections are not currently supported." I know doing this for unlimited sources is a large task. But to SQLserver should be a piece of cake you did it for AS Just add it leave the rest for later. Any feedback as to why this one connection can't be done would be great.

Hi Riccardo, any ETA will be helpful. Currently we are unable to implement this as we do can't expected to build SSAS cubes for all our reports.
Thanks

Does later this year mean 2018? I mean, we're already moving into September without any updates of substance.

Hello Riccardo,
Do you have any news on this one? any release date? as soon as SQL server database connection is available, we start using Power Bi Server in production.
Thanks in advance for your help.

RE: Save Power BI report to Report Server with data source other than Analysis Services

We are closly following Riccardo and team offerings for on premise, since the !aunch of the Jan 2017 SSRS technical peeview to power BI on premise solution. We also tried installing and using the Jan 2017 preview. Then we were also thrilled to learn about the launch of tge Power BI Report Server preview in May 2017, followed by GA in June 2017. However, we could not setup any meaningful proof of concept, using the Jan 2017 and tge May 2017 previews, and GA. The reason is very simple. Our data model has a schema which requires direct import from Microsoft SQL server DB for its tranansaction tables; our schema also requires importing many dimmension tables from Microsoft Excel. While None of these data sources are suppoted by Microsoft on premise solution Power BI Report Server. Due to company policy we cannot publish to the cloud, therefore we are anxiotly await this feature.

RE: Save Power BI report to Report Server with data source other than Analysis Services

Hello All,

While using Power BI Report Server when I try upload my dashboard in the server it saying only online dashboard ca be uploaded with the connecting SQL server.

There are many reports in flat file which is prepared offline cannot be uploaded in Report server it is not support.

Will I get this feature in upcoming update in Report Server offline dashboard can be uploaded. It a very important feature for Power BI Report server because client also want to upload offline dashboard in the server.

If you provide the feature it will be very helpful.

Thanks
Aamir
