At this time, a gateway will not function properly if you are using data sources and one is online and one is on-prem. As soon as the online data source is added, the gateway is designed to gray out because Power BI interprets that it is no longer needed. I would like to be able to combine data sources from both on-prem and online sources together with the use of gateways.

RE: Combine enterprise gateway and online data sources

Totally agree with Cbaliliss - Personal Gateway is not a viable workaround - can Microsoft indicate where in the backlog this falls?

Same issues, we are using SharePoint onLine lists to handle Master Data and let end user update them when needed.

As soon as we put pbix online, refresh data doesn't works :/

RE: Combine enterprise gateway and online data sources

Agreed. Enterprise connections serve larger user sets, freeing individuals up from "running dedicated personal gateways on their laptops"... But then I am limited when I get to a server, and either set up a dummy account, or force an individual to publish only from a server... Really need enterprise caught up in datasources...

RE: Combine enterprise gateway and online data sources

This is a great idea, I'm surprised this hasn't had a greater number of votes. In our case we're using CRM Online and we want to combine it with data from our on-prem finance solution, again as @Rflad says using a common ID to combine the data. Again, as with Rflad we can create these reports in the Desktop app and upload them, but as soon as they are online the refresh stops working. Interestingly, using a personal gateway works fine, but that isn't an enterprise solution.

Have the same problem. Can't connect both MySQL and files on OneDrive when I use Enterprise Gateway. Hope this will be fixed soon.

...., in this case SP you CAN'T benefit from the gateway......

RE: Combine enterprise gateway and online data sources

To be more specific, let’s say you have a common ID between Dynamics NAV on-prem and a list in SharePoint Online. You add both data sources to the same report, create a relation between the common ID and then you have a report that can reflect/filter content across both systems. The limitation I refer to above is connected to updating the dataset/report as soon as you have uploaded the content to app.powerbi.com. While working in PowerBi desktop locally on your client the update from both sources are working fine. But as soon as the report enter the “cloud” and you want to plan the update, it’s not possible. The enterprise gateway that I have created is greyed out due to the limitation mentioned above. Since the report also contain data from an online source, in this case SP you can benefit from the gateway. Not possible to enter credentials for the online source either.
