It's hard to convey the real enterprise need here, but the reliance on a Data Gateway is ridiculously limited. I get the intent to provide a simplified solution, but virtually every client project we work on has legacy environments where a data gateway cannot satisfy the need. In these cases, we MUST have a direct way to connect to resources. This is a key feature of Apache Spark (to be able to connect to JDBC sources), yet the current approach in Fabric is way too restrictive and inflexible.In Databricks, setting up access to on-prem legacy systems over a VNet "just works" -- unfortunately Fabric's implementation of their VNet Gateway is ridiculously handicapped such that this process perplexingly falls apart and fails to work. They have over-engineered a newer solution with a broken design instead of using what works perfectly well in the more standard approach.Part of the problem has to do with their implementation where their pooled VMs are not able to join a VNet dynamically. That sounds like a simpler engineering problem to solve than to ask all Microsoft clients to rearchitect their environments and downgrade their expectations of Fabric's offering just so they bring in critical business data into the platform.
